Origin
Most of these background guides for the characters will mention a never really written (that much at all) series named Kidz Trek, or more accurately the spin offs The Voyage Home, Planetary Quest, and Millennium. This is the first one in the list and basically 'cos Lena's one of the reasons why Fifth Voyager started, so it's best to do it in here.

In about 1996/1997 I decided to start a Star Trek type series, with the crew being mainly kids/teens. The Original Series stole a lot, most of it wasn't original. It wasn't exactly the best idea in the world, but I was only 11/12. A second series was made after I got into Voyager, in 1998 apparently. This was just Voyager, with a younger Janeway/Chakotay up until the Borg (aka the Tolg lol) episodes, and a "season" every month spanning three years (I'm not kidding, each series but PQ and the last unnamed one did the same). They rescued a character called Roxanne from them. In their seventh season they had a daughter, and named her Kiara. The cliffhanger for Season 14 was the crew finding out that Roxanne is Kiara in the episode Timeline, which is similar to the FV version and mixed in with stuff from Precise Timings. The cliffhanger was that they almost lost Roxanne but lost another character, but that's not important. The two remained sisters for the remainder of the series and it's other "spinoffs".

The transition into Fifth Voyager
Back in 1999/2000 I discovered Voyager fanfiction, and as a writer wannabe who just had a few tiny stories and many rubbish cartoon strips (yeah, don't ask), I wanted to have a go at doing my own. I never wrote an episode of that said series above, just the episode listings so I decided to do some mixing.

Vulpix had already written a story about Q playing matchmaker with Janeway/Chakotay, where they ended up with a kid. She apparently accused a site of copying her, and decided to leave the Voyager writing for good. I decided to rewrite this story, using Q as the reason why the two got pregnant. That story was called Tragedy. I had also decided to write the story The Curse of Voyager after getting addicted to the Mummy (1999) movie, which was based many years after that story where the child was about five/six. Not satisfied I planned a ten part series with these two, the "prequel" to TCOV later known as The Resurrection, with Resolutions being the first. After I decided to do that, the spark quickly faded away.

Other series ideas came about: the time travel series (which would of been co-written by the Dimension 5.2 writer), a possession series I think it was, The 'What If' series which created the Alternate Scorpion episode, and Behind the Camera which was basically different "actors" playing the Voyager crew (the horrible beast that inspired the horrible Director's Cut). One of each was started, though I can't remember the time travel one I did, unfortunately I still have the possession one where crewmembers got possessed by vampires believe it or not. My favourite was the What If, but I lost that.

Anyway one day I was trying to think a new series to write. I thought about rewriting original episodes like in the What If series (and Kidz Trek I suppose), I wanted the Kiara/Roxanne thing in it as it was at the time my only original thing in that "spin off", despite the Voyage series being a big rip off I wanted to write it and Voyager fanfiction was my way of doing it. A list of episodes were written down that I wanted parodying, plus the episodes that formed the storyline in KT were added as well.. most of Season One was born.

One day I was reading the Star Trek magazine, one page had that Voyager cast shot with the pink background and black clothes. I had the Aqua CD Doctor Jones sitting nearby, I was probably listening to it. And bingo, I had my final idea. I am sure that other series (there would of been fanfiction series surely) didn't think of having actors playing their characters, now they're everywhere. I doubt I started it, but I noticed them spring up during FV's time period. Anyway I came up with the name Morgan for the Roxanne character, and decided to keep Kiara as Kiara. I hated Seven of Nine, but the reason I got into Voyager was that I thought the idea of an ex-Borg character a very good one at that. Too bad she got annoying. Morgan/Lena was her replacement in a way. How I got into fanfiction was that I was a J/C shipper, and the first fanfiction I found was J/C shippy.. Lena just had to be Janeway/Chakotay's. It was certainly fitting.

Change over the year(s)
Morgan came aboard as a chirpy teen who didn't seem at all affected by all the Borg implants she had. True she hadn't been in the collective properly at all. She was always lively and fun, one of the things I made sure to point out in her first episode was that she gets along with everyone. Over the years her big moments have been where she was in conflict with other characters, or about her on-off relationship with Craig. She really was the type that likes anyone she meets, and judges them later.

The big changes occurred when the Kiara thing was revealed. Morgan became Lena, I gave her a new name as I felt she was one of the only main characters (I only count James, Jess, Lena, Craig, Kiara and possibly Damien as main, main characters) that hadn't been developed in Season Two. Season One she seemed to be friends with a lot of people, Season Two she got closer to only two of them: James and Craig. Lena fell out with Tani, which in the end really phased her out of the series. It was all about family and responsibility in Season Three, the latter she really wasn't old or mature enough to handle. Both are too much for her in Season Four, everything that happened in Season Two/Three lead to the episode Burnt out and Falling. True it wasn't all planned out in advance, it seemed to lead there naturally for me.

With Kiara returning in Season Five, the Roxanne/Kiara and Lena/Kiara storyline which created Fifth Voyager isn't over. What happens next? Who knows? Only me.

Season One was basically planned, apart from their storyline and a tiny bit of the Slayer stuff. Kiara and Lena were meant to be different from the start, episodes like Timeless, Mirror Universes.. they were the hints.

Lena arrived on the scene that bubbly, not a care in the world teenager, and sadly left depressed, lonely and unsure of herself. How it ended up that way, even I don't know.

Overall her addition has been..
A success, despite the last sentences. There's only a few characters that I enjoyed writing from the start, and still did to the very end (or just still..), Lena was one off them. She's contributed a lot to the series, obviously with her the storyline with Kiara being one of the driving forces behind it. Of course wether people have understood it or not is another story. Fifth Voyager was created as an AU series, it would never have worked if Lena's story wasn't in it. It would of just been rewrites of original episodes, with no real point as to why they were different until James' "origin" was discovered, I doubt FV would of gotten to Season Three though without Kiara/Lena though. A lot of Season One can't just be explained that it's only cos Kiara and/or Lena are about, cos well... the reason was Cherry Coke addiction and me being a mad 15/16 year old, but you know what I mean surely. Lena is FV, no doubt about that.
